And it's beautiful! I am learning tons of new information through this series. Right now, I'm about halfway through Margot Adler's
Drawing Down the Moon. In her resource section is an online journal called
Metaformia, dedicated to menstruation & culture! More about
Metaformia anon. Metaformia led me to Vanessa Tiegs, artist in many media. Her
Menstrala series was created with her menstrual blood over a few years. Tiegs was inspired by the poet who edits
Metaformia.
Another interesting book on the historical impact of menstruation is Blood, Bread and Roses: How Menstruation Created the World, by Judy Grahn (1993).
ReplyDeleteI was just looking up menstrual art on the internet and came across this same artist before I popped in to read your post today. I also found some beautiful and some really amusing pieces that are about menstruation but in more traditional media :)
ReplyDeleteJudy Grahn is the editor of Metaformia! She was Tiegs's inspiration.
ReplyDeleteNo way! That's so cool!
ReplyDeleteI have to get my hands on that Blood Bread and Roses book.
ReplyDeleteAnd here i was thinking i was weird for pouring mine into the pot plant... Very different, beautiful.
